Lockhart officer-involved shooting: Suspect shot, injured by APD SWAT

A man is facing charges after Lockhart police say he shot someone, then fled and barricaded himself inside a home on Saturday.

The multi-agency effort shut down the neighborhood for hours.

Lockhart police say that around 3 p.m. on Jan. 11, emergency dispatch received a 911 call reporting a physical assault. When officers arrived in the 900 block of S. Brazos Street, they found a man with a gunshot wound. EMS took the man to the hospital, and he has since been released.

An initial investigation indicated the suspect had fired at the victim, then fled the area. Lockhart police obtained an arrest warrant for aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

Police later found the suspect who then barricaded himself inside a home on First Street, less than a mile from where the initial incident happened. Lockhart police then requested help from the Austin Police Department SWAT team.

Lockhart police say during the apprehension, the suspect "resisted" and, as a result, was injured. According to an APD watch commander, the suspect exited the building with a handgun and was shot by SWAT.

The suspect was taken to a local hospital and, as of Sunday morning, is in stable condition. Lockhart police say once he is discharged, he will be taken to the Caldwell County Jail. He faces charges of aggravated assault with a deadly weapon.

LPD says this is believed to be an isolated incident with no ongoing threat to the public.

Neighbor's reaction

One neighbor spoke with FOX 7 Austin's Jenna King, saying she's never seen anything like it before.

"I've never seen that. That is movie stuff that you see in the movies and it really happens in real life," said Dorothy Jennings.

That's how she described the scene in her typically quiet Lockhart neighborhood.

"I did see a heavy presence of Lockhart police officers at the scene and, from there kind of went into the police officers, to the swat, to the, to the drones," Jennings said. "They did get on the mic and try to tell him to come out. And we did hear a lot of that the mic talk."

Jennings lives just a few doors down from where it all went down. When she went outside, she said she was instructed to go back inside.

"I did hear a couple of shots fired. I'm thinking about three. But they were kind of very muffled. And then I think it topped it off for one good loud shot."

Jennings said she's surprised to see something like this happen in her community.

"Any crime in your neighborhood that…it's going to be scary. But this, of course, this kind of raised more like wow, especially for Lockhart. We really don't see too many SWAT robots or drones," she said.

"Just neighborhoods to be vigilant. You just never know what's going on in your neighborhood. And you as a neighbor, as a part of your community, can do so much just by watching what's going on," she added.
