Nationwide search continues for missing Barron, Wis. teen whose parents were killed

BARRON, Wis. (KMSP) - The nationwide search continues Tuesday for 13-year-old Jayme Closs, whose parents were found shot to death inside their home in Barron, Wisconsin early Monday morning. 

The Barron County Sheriff's Office reprocessed the Closs family on Highway 8 Tuesday afternoon, where Jayme's parents, James and Denise Closs were found dead. 

Neighbors reported hearing gunshots coming from the family’s home shortly after midnight Monday. The Barron County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call from inside the home shortly before 1 a.m., but no one spoke directly to dispatchers, there was only some background noise. 

When deputies arrived, they found James and Denise shot to death. Authorities believe Jayme was inside the home when her parents were killed, but she was gone by the time deputies got there. 

Authorities believe Jayme is in imminent danger. An AMBER Alert for her was issued on Monday afternoon. Anyone with information is asked to call the tip line at 1-855-744-3879. 

Investigators visited Jayme’s school to interview friends and classmates. They are also looking into her social media accounts to try to uncover some clues. 

At a news conference Tuesday morning, Sheriff Chris Fitzgerald said there was a Closs family gathering on Sunday afternoon. It may have been the last time Jayme was seen. 

Fitzgerald said Jayme is described as sweet and shy.

If you know someone whose behavior has changed or there are changes in their routine, pay attention to that, the sheriff said. Additionally, he said people may have information and not even realize it.

The FBI is now involved in the case as well. 

There was a reported sighting of Jayme in Miami on Monday afternoon. A tipster called the Miami Police Department saying they believed they said Jayme at a gas station in a black Ford Explorer with a Wisconsin license plate. There is surveillance footage from the gas station. Police and the FBI are following up on the tip, but the sheriff has since deemed it "not credible."
