Austin Police identified Zachary Schmidt, 33, as the victim in Saturday's fatal crash on Mopac.

According to APD, Schmidt's car struck a light pole after failing to negotiate the exit ramp onto East Hwy 71. Schmidt was pronounced dead at the scene.

Police have not said if alcohol played a factor in the crash. A toxicology report is pending.

Austin Police say one man is dead after he crashed his car along Mopac Saturday morning. It happened around 3:30 a.m. Police received a 911 call from someone who drove up on the crash in South Austin.

There were no witnesses and the driver died at the scene. He was around 20 years old and crash investigators say he was not wearing his seatbelt.

"It appears the driver lost control as he was taking the Sunset Valley exit and his vehicle struck a pole," said Sgt. Courtney Daniel with APD.

The man's name has not been released. Police are looking into possible factors that may have contributed to the crash.
