Police: Man attacked woman from behind on Southwest Austin trail

Austin police are searching for a man they say attacked a woman in the middle of the day in a wooded area in Southwest Austin.

The woman was on a secluded section of a trail near the Archstone Greenbelt, around 1 p.m. Saturday when she was attacked from behind. The woman was able to fight that man off. Police say she is in stable condition.

People who live in the neighborhood say the trail is a popular cut through for apartment complexes and a nearby Target. They also expressed concern about a “growing” number of transients sleeping on the trail.

“We just don’t feel that safe.” said one young mother, who asked to remain anonymous.

She said she's very surprised about the area.

“It was so safe, and I have a lot of friends around -- and then, everybody started feeling uncomfortable," she said. "Some of my friends started seeing people in front of their houses.”

The suspect is described as a 25 to 30-year-old black man, with a Nigerian accent. He is about 5’7” with a medium build. Anyone with information is urged to call police.
