Protesters detained and then released after blocking Dallas bridge

Dallas police arrested dozens of people who blocked the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge last night.

DALLAS - Dallas police made numerous arrests Monday night as protesters blocked a busy bridge. But those people may not face any charges.

The group of protesters first gathered outside the Frank Crowley Courthouse, which is outside the area affected by the 7 p.m. curfew in Dallas.

They demanded justice for George Floyd and demonstrated peacefully at the courthouse for several hours Monday afternoon and into the evening.

Then just before 9 p.m., the crowd began to move toward the Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge in West Dallas.

Officers formed a barrier to keep the demonstrators from crossing all the way over the bridge. It was the first time members of the Texas National Guard assisted Dallas police and SWAT.

The officers eventually deployed smoke to try to break up the crowd. Some protesters were seen laying down on the bridge and many were detained.

Dallas Police Chief Renee Hall was out among the crowd earlier in the evening and said she continues to support the peaceful protests.

“I would say to them I support them. We are all angry about what happened to Mr. Floyd. I have been the first person to stand up and condemn, alongside every police chief across this country. And we know that these are things that have happened in the past, even in the Dallas Police Department. And we are committed to change,” she said.

Protesters met with smoke, flashbangs while crossing Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge

As protesters were crossing Margaret Hunt Hill Bridge, police formed a line to block them from crossing.

Dallas City Council member Adam Bazaldua was on the bridge and said those who were detained were later released. They were slowly returned to the courthouse where many had parked their cars.

A source told FOX 4 those detained may not be charged.

Dallas County District Attorney John Creuzot’s office released a statement that said he would not get involved in the way of police doing their job.

"Any cases that come into the DA's office will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis,” the statement said

The officers did take down the information of those detained and they may be issued tickets.

The Dallas Police Department has not provided an update about the arrests made overnight.
