Three-year-old child killed in hit and run identified, search for driver continues
*Update* The Travis County Medical Examiner's has identified the child killed in the hit-and-run as three-year-old Ethan Hernandez Maldonado. Officials say he died from blunt head trauma.
The Austin Police Department is searching for a driver accused of hitting and killing a three-year-old boy and leaving the scene Sunday night. The little boy was hit in the 5700 hundred block of Cameron Road in East Austin, near I-35. The person who hit the boy was driving southbound on Cameron Road and didn't stop after hitting him.
According to police, the boy was hit by a Chevy Silverado truck just after 5 pm.
When police officers arrived on scene, the parents were giving the boy CPR. Austin-Travis County EMS took the boy to a local hospital where he later died. It is unclear at this time why the child was in the street.
This is the second child to be hit and killed by a vehicle in just under a week.
On May 13, a five-year-old boy died after being hit by a van near Wooten Elementary. Officers says children cannot think they way adults can and are not aware of the hazards.
"This is a consequence of a crowded society. Keep your kids close. On a street, keep your hand on your child. They tend to run out, distracted, chasing whatever. If you cannot hold on to them, keep them close to you that's the safest thing for everyone involved," said Sergeant Chad Francois.
According to police, a witness followed the truck for a while and they were still getting information from that person. The vehicle is described as an older model, white and tan Chevy Silverado with a ladder in the back.
If you have any information or saw anything, you are asked to contact the Austin Police Department.
