Church memorial continuing to grow for victims of shooting

SUTHERLAND SPRINGS, Texas - Just beyond the police tape a small memorial of flowers continued to grow Monday. Flowers, though, cannot mask the heart ache felt in Sutherland Springs.  

Church pastor Frank Pomeroy said he is still trying to find the right words to express to those of his congregation who lost family members.

“For what ever life brings to you lean on the Lord rather than your own understanding, I don’t understand I don’t understand, but I know my God does and that is where I will leave that,” said Pastor Pomeroy 

Those words are also for him and his wife. their 14-year-old daughter is among the dead.

“We don’t want to overshadow the other lives lost yesterday, we lost more than belle yesterday, and one thing that gives me a sliver of encouragement is the fact that Belle was surrounded yesterday by her church family that she loved fiercely and vice versa,” said Sherri Pomeroy. 

As the healing process gets underway we are also learning more about the two men who are responsible for leading authorities to the gunman.

“If he hadn’t been there,  the guy possibly would have gotten away,” said Wilson county Sheriff Joe Tackitt.

The neighbor, according to the sheriff would prefer  to avoid the media. But he did not hesitate and confronted Kelley as he emerged from the church.

“He doesn't’t believe he is a hero but I believe he is,” said Tackitt.  

The other man who is being called a hero is Johnny Langendorff. 

“Both had weapons drawn and immediately started exchanging fire the shooter got into his vehicle and took off,” said Langendorff who at the time was on his way to see his girlfriend. He described what happened when the neighbor flag him down.

“(He) Jumped into my truck and told me he just shot up the church, we got to go get him  and I said OK, let’s go ... That’s exactly what I said let’s go there was no thought no hesitation nothing.”

The chase to the Wilson Guadalupe county line lasted about 10 minutes.
  
There were a few times that there could’ve been an accident but thankfully there wasn't’,” said Lengendorff..

Kelley drove his SUV off the road, It’s believed he had a gunshot wound from the shoot out with the neighbor.
 As the two men closed in investigator said Kelley took his own life.
  
“I’m just a man who did what I felt was the right thing to do,” said Langendorff.
