Man accused of sexual assault found guilty

A Travis County jury has found an Austin man guilty of a sexual assault that happened in 2016.

Nicodemo Coria-Gonzalez, a Mexican national, was found guilty of sexually assaulting a woman in north Austin in April 2016. But his time in court is far from over.

The sentencing phase is now beginning, however, in addition, prosecutors are presenting evidence to the jury that they say links Coria-Gonzalez to six other violent sexual assaults. One of the other alleged victims testified Thursday about her assault in 2015.

She said after a night of drinking on 6th Street, she left her hotel, was picked up by Coria-Gonzalez and he sexually assaulted her in his car. Members of the S.A.F.E. Alliance were at the courthouse throughout the trial for emotional support.

"Justice and accountability are very hard to pursue in the area of sexual assault. It's very important that victims are listened to from a point of view without judgment and believing their experience,” said Julianna Gonzalez with S.A.F.E. Alliance.

Testimony for the sentencing phase will consist of several other victims coming forward. Testimony will continue through Friday. Coria-Gonzalez faces between 5 to 99 years in prison.
