Man busted in Ohio for trying to buy 50,000 stamps using a fraudulent check

A New York man was indicted by a grand jury after police received a call from an Ohio post office that an individual had attempted to buy 50,000 stamps using a counterfeit check. 

Christopher R. Ellis, 24, was indicted by a grand jury for one count of attempted grand theft, and two counts of forgery, according to the Geauga County Prosecutors Office official Facebook page.

Chardon Police were called to an Ohio post office on Aug. 19 for the report of a suspicious man who had attempted to purchase 50,000 stamps. 

The postmaster sent an alert about the individual, later identified as Christopher Ellis, after he bought $40,000 in stamps from three Ohio post offices using fake checks.

After an investigation by the Chardon Police Department, a fraudulent Ohio identification card and fake check were found. 

Christopher Ellis is currently held in a Geauga County jail and was arraigned on Sept. 29, according to the Geauga County Prosecutors Office.
