Body of missing boat operator recovered from Lake LBJ

The body of a missing boat operator was recovered by rescue crews in Lake LBJ Sunday morning.

Jesse Marcus Estes, 44, of Sarita, Texas, had been missing since a boating accident along the Colorado arm of Lake LBJ Friday afternoon. His body was found near the site of the accident, says the Texas Game Wardens in a release.

Crews determined the boat had hit a large wave and Estes and passengers were ejected from the boat. First responders were able to locate everyone else Friday except for Estes.

Texas Game Wardens committed over a dozen wardens, three side scan sonar boats, one dive team boat and a Texas Game Warden human remains K9 to the search

The Burnet County Sheriff’s Office, LCRA Lake Rangers with a side scan sonar boat, and Horseshoe Bay Police Department’s side scan sonar boat all assisted in the search alongside fire department personnel and divers from Cassie VFD, Lake Buchanan VFD, Kingsland VFD, Sunrise Beach VFD and Hoover Valley VFD.

Texas Game Wardens says the search and recovery effort was complicated by several factors, including high boat traffic in the area and numerous underwater obstacles such as manmade debris, large rocks and other natural features that limited sonar effectiveness and diver visibility.

Because of this, Texas Game Wardens enlisted the help of one of its human remains K9s Sunday morning, which alerted wardens in the same area the accident occurred and while making a second pass to pinpoint the location, wardens found the body.

No autopsy has been ordered.
