Campbell Elementary parents say children were 'kidnapped' by substitute bus driver Tuesday
AUSTIN - Austin ISD parents said their children were kidnapped by a substitute school bus driver on Tuesday morning. The district claims the driver was lost.
What we know:
The principal of Campbell Elementary School, Keith Moore, said Tuesday morning a substitute bus driver picked up students, brought them to Campbell, "but did not let them off the bus."
Moore said the bus driver then drove them to Winn Montessori, about four miles away from the school. Moore said, "The sub driver did not know where to drop the kids off at Campbell, so he took them to another Austin ISD school. We immediately contacted Austin ISD dispatch who followed the bus to Winn."
In a news release from the school to the parents, the principal of Winn Montessori said, "This morning, our campus went into a ‘Secure’ for about 30 minutes after a substitute bus driver picked up Campbell Elementary School students and mistakenly drove to our campus."

Winn Montessori Principal Bridget Farr said the campus went into a "Secure" for about 30 minutes. During a "Secure," all activities continue inside, but no one may leave or enter school buildings.
Parents said they were following the bus on an app and when they realized the bus was at Winn and not Campbell, they showed up. Parents claim the driver wouldn’t let their children off.
One parent says the parents began kicking the bus door until the driver opened it, letting the children off the bus.
Moore said while students waited on the bus, the bus door was kicked in by a parent and glass shattered. Moore said 11 parents picked up their children and 21 students were taken to Campbell at 8:30 a.m.
AISD says the bus driver is not facing any charges.
A transportation training staff member will cover the route until the usual bus driver returns on Thursday.
What we don't know:
The identity of the bus driver has not been released by officials.
What they're saying:
Campbell ISD sent the following email to parents on Tuesday.
Subject: Bus Route Incident
Dear Campbell Families,
This morning a substitute bus driver picked up students on your child’s bus route, brought them to our school, but did not let them off the bus. The sub driver did not know where to drop off kids at Campbell, so he took them to another Austin ISD school (Winn Montessori), about four miles away from our school.
We immediately contacted Austin ISD dispatch who followed the bus to Winn.
Students waited on the bus to be transported back to Campbell. When I learned of the situation I headed to Winn to meet the students and reassure them they were safe and with a trusted adult.
While students waited on the bus, the bus door was kicked in by a parent and glass shattered. Ultimately, 11 parents picked up their children and 21 students were transported to Campbell at 8:30 a.m.
Our transportation supervisors are working to understand what caused this confusion with the route. We understand that this may have been difficult for your child to experience. We will have counselors check in with your child today to ensure they receive any support needed.
