The tree lighting ceremony has been an annual tradition in Austin for 54 years. This year was the first the tradition was carried out virtually due to COVID-19. 

This year, instead of walking in Austin's version of a winter wonderland, visitors will be driving through the show.

The ceremony will be virtual this year, due to gathering restrictions, and will be streamed on Sunday, Nov. 29 at 6 p.m.

The iconic and longest-running holiday tradition of its kind in Austin will be drive-thru only this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. 

The Austin Parks Foundation (APF) announced the seven finalists at its annual Party for the Parks on September 30 and possible names include The Armadillo Express and Edwina Justus.

The festival announced on Thursday that they will be commemorating the festival weekend with a special free broadcast on October 9-11, one of the originally scheduled weekends of the canceled 2020 festival.

The sight of barren tracks in Zilker Park is heartbreaking to those who used to enjoy the train that once rode along them.

Now a city council proposal directs the city manager to try and reach an agreement with the Austin Parks Foundation, which would be put in charge of finding a new vendor and overseeing operations.

Hundreds of people came to pay their final goodbyes to the beloved train.

"The perception and actions by the city prove that the small businesses in Austin and locally owned are not a priority."

For more than two decades the Zilker Zephyr offered children and families a 20-minute excursion in Zilker Park but a washout under some of the train tracks near the Zilker Park Great Lawn lead to collapse in contract talks between the operator and the city. 

The operator stated on Facebook they wanted a new five-year contract, in order to recoup the costs. But it was claimed that the city countered with a three-year deal, including a possible two-year extension.
